Diary kept daily while on journey to California aboard the ship Hannibal out of Boston on Nov. 21, 1849 and arriving in San Francisco on May 6, 1850. Dutiful log of activities aboard ship including helping with repairs, and a list of passengers and crew. Diary included gold leaf.

John Pond Farmer, from Massachusetts, was a blacksmith by trade. He worked in Eureka, Calif., and Oregon City and Portland, Ore. after arriving in California in 1850. Farmer eventually moved back to Massachusetts.
